The Hearth
At the centre of everything burned the Hearth. Its warmth reached every hill and hollow.
The keepers carried its flame out to every camp, forge and shrine, and each dawn was the Hearth's fire coming back over the hills.
One great fire lit every camp, forge and shrine, and each morning the dawn came home over the hills. Its keepers carried the flame wherever it was needed. This is the story of the last of them.
Move. Survive the swarm. Grow stronger. Hold the ember until dawn.
How a night plays
At the centre of everything burned the Hearth. Its warmth reached every hill and hollow.
The keepers carried its flame out to every camp, forge and shrine, and each dawn was the Hearth's fire coming back over the hills.
Then the Hearth began to fail. Nobody agrees why.
The nights grew longer. Every dawn came weaker than the last, and the keepers began to walk home in the dark.
The dark wasn't empty. Everything the Hearth had ever burned — forests, forges, beasts, the dead — rose out of its own ash.
They don't hate the living. They are cold, and they remember being fire. Every flame they reach, they smother trying to get warm.
The keepers went out one by one. You are the last.
Each night you walk into a place the dark has taken, light a camp, and hold it until dawn. Every night you hold, dawn comes back to that place a little stronger.
The sun is going out.
The dark remembers being fire.
You carry the last ember.
The Ashen
You are the brightest thing left in the world. The brighter you burn, the more of the dark comes looking.
Hold your light over one to see what it was.
The road
The road back runs through every place the dark has taken. It begins in the forest the Dimming claimed first — and it keeps going.
Why is the Hearth failing?Every night you survive, the road answers a little more.
One night
You are the last keeper. Hold the camp for sixty seconds and the dawn comes back.
